Does slavery exist in the modern world?

Unfortunately, yes, slavery still exists in the modern world, although it takes different forms than in the past. According to the Global Slavery Index, an estimated 40.3 million people worldwide are living in some form of modern slavery, including forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage, and child labour. This number represents about 0.5% of the global population.

Modern slavery can be found in various industries and settings, such as agriculture, fishing, mining, construction, manufacturing, and domestic work. It can also occur in the form of human trafficking, where individuals are subjected to forced labour or sexual exploitation.

Some of the main factors contributing to modern slavery include poverty, lack of education, discrimination, and political instability. People who are poor and vulnerable are often at greater risk of being exploited and trapped in slavery.

Many governments and organisations are working to combat modern slavery through various initiatives and policies. These efforts include raising awareness, improving law enforcement, providing support for victims, and addressing the root causes of slavery. However, it remains a significant global challenge, and continued efforts are needed to eradicate it completely.
