History of South America

When did middle class men get to vote?

Middle class men got the right to vote gradually over time. In the United States, the first states to allow voting for middle-class men were South Carolina in 1778, North Carolina in 1776 and Georgia in 1777. Voting then expanded further and by 1860 most middle class white men could vote. Finally in 1870 when the 15th amendment was passed all men except African Americans could vote. African American men finally achieved voting rights with the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
