History of South America

Where did slaves run away to get out of slavery?

Slaves who ran away to escape slavery had a number of destinations in mind, including:

* Free states: In the United States, there were a number of free states where slavery was illegal, such as Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. These states were a popular destination for runaway slaves because they offered a chance to live in freedom and to start a new life.

* Canada: Canada was another popular destination for runaway slaves, as it was a British colony where slavery had been abolished. Canada was also close to the United States, making it a relatively easy escape route.

* Mexico: Mexico was another option for runaway slaves, as it was a country where slavery had also been abolished. Mexico was located further away from the United States, making it a more difficult escape route, but it was still a popular destination for those who were determined to escape.

* Other countries: Some runaway slaves also attempted to escape to other countries, such as the United Kingdom, France, or Haiti. These countries were further away and more difficult to reach, but they offered a chance for freedom and a new start.
