History of South America

What were the two goals of south in civil war?

1. To preserve slavery. Slavery was the foundation of the Southern economy, and white Southerners feared that their way of life would be destroyed if slavery were abolished. The Confederate Constitution explicitly protected slavery, and Confederate leaders repeatedly declared that they were fighting to defend their rights to own slaves.

2. To achieve independence from the United States. Southerners had long felt that they were treated unfairly by the federal government, and the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was the final straw. They feared that Lincoln would abolish slavery and destroy their way of life, and they seceded from the Union in order to protect their independence.
