Historical story

What happened at Glencoe on 13th February 1692?

On 13th February 1692, the Massacre of Glencoe took place. It was an attack on the MacDonald clan by government troops led by Robert Campbell of Glenlyon. The attack was ordered by the Scottish Secretary, John Dalrymple, the 1st Earl of Stair, in retaliation for the MacDonalds' failure to submit to King William III of Scotland's authority after the Jacobite uprising in 1689.

Over 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed in the massacre, mostly in their sleep, and many more died from exposure and starvation in the aftermath. The massacre is considered to be one of the darkest episodes in Scottish history and has been the subject of much historical debate and discussion.
