How long does a US 20 dollar bill stay in circulation?

The average lifespan of a US $20 bill is about 4 years. However, some bills may stay in circulation for as long as 10 years, while others may be retired after only a few months. The Federal Reserve tracks the lifespan of banknotes using a variety of methods, including machine vision systems that can identify when bills are damaged or have been intentionally altered. Bills that are deemed unfit for circulation are removed from circulation and destroyed.
