History of South America

What are three reasons English settlers established colonies in America?

Economic Reasons

- England desired to find gold, minerals, and other valuable resources to boost its economy. The idea of riches found in America enticed many English settlers to seek them out.

- Establish agricultural industries. The soil in America was quite fertile, unlike several European countries. With the abundance of land and available resources, the settlers could produce several commodities for export and create a profit for themselves and the English markets.

-The opportunity to start new businesses. Some English settlers desired the freedom and opportunity America provided for entrepreneurial ventures. America gave them the chance to start a business and succeed without the harsh competition and regulations they might face in England.

Religious Reasons

- Escape religious persecution. Many of the early English settlers were Puritans who desired religious freedom to worship as they wished without interference from the Church of England. Puritans, Separatists, and other Pilgrims established many colonies in America primarily for religious reasons.

Political and Social Reasons

- Escape from poor living conditions in England. Many people left England due to the social and economic inequalities within English society. The opportunity to own land and start a better life for themselves and their families brought them to America.

- The opportunity for adventure. The thought of exploring a new world and living in an unknown land provided an exciting venture for many settlers.
