History of South America

Where did some slaves run away to?

* Free states: Many slaves escaped to free states in the North, such as Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. These states had laws that prohibited slavery, and they offered safe haven to escaped slaves.

* Canada: Canada was another popular destination for escaped slaves. The British Empire had abolished slavery in 1833, and Canada was a free territory. Many slaves made their way to Canada through the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom.

* Mexico: Mexico was also a popular destination for escaped slaves. Mexico had abolished slavery in 1829, and it offered freedom to any slaves who could make it to its territory.

* Other countries: Some slaves also escaped to other countries, such as the West Indies, Europe, and Africa.
