The institution of slavery. Southerners believed that owning enslaved African Americans gave them a significant economic and military advantage over the North. This advantage was reflected in the fact that the South had more slaves than any other region of the country, and that slaves were used to produce a large portion of the South's wealth. Furthermore, it allowed Southerners to field a larger and more powerful army, as they could use enslaved African Americans as soldiers and support staff.
