History of South America

How many railroads were destroyed in the south as a result of civil war?

During the American Civil War, at least 233 railroad bridges were destroyed in the Southern states by Federal Armies under a directive issued in 1864 requiring Union forces in Georgia and the Carolinas to burn the "railroad depots, cars, machinery, water tanks, etcetera." Some estimates of total damages approach $41 million (approximately $576 million in 2015 inflation-adjusted currency) to both railroads and roads.
