History of South America

What were two large crops produced in the Southern Colonies?

Tobacco was one of the most important cash crops grown in the Southern Colonies. Virginia and Maryland were the two largest producers of tobacco. The crop was used for smoking and chewing, and its cultivation required a great deal of labor. Tobacco was often used as a form of currency in the Southern Colonies.

Rice was another major crop produced in the Southern Colonies. It was grown primarily in South Carolina and Georgia. The rice grown in these colonies was long-grain and of very high quality. The cultivation of rice also required a great deal of labor, as it had to be planted in low, marshy areas and weeded regularly. The harvesting and processing of rice was also very time consuming.
