France battled with other European countries, such as Britain and Spain, for control of American colonies in the 18th century. After losing the Seven Years' War in 1763, France ceded all of its North American territories to Britain. France then turned to the slave trade, and became a major slave-trading nation in the 18th and 19th centuries. French slave traders captured and transported millions of Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas to be sold as slaves.
