How did the Compromise of 1850 appease Southerners while still allowing California to be a free state?

The Compromise of 1850 was a package of laws passed by the United States Congress that temporarily resolved the political conflict over slavery in the newly acquired territories from the Mexican-American War. It did not allow California to be a free state while appeasing Southerners; instead, California was admitted as a free state without addressing whether or not slavery would be allowed in the future.
