History of South America

Why did Russia change flag?

Flag of the Russian Empire (1699-1917)

The flag was designed by Tsar Peter the Great and was based on the Dutch flag. It consisted of three horizontal stripes of white, blue, and red. This flag represented Russian imperialism and the Romanov dynasty.

Flag of the Soviet Union (1922-1991)

The flag was designed by Vladimir Tatlin and was based on the flag of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (RSFSR). It consisted of a red background with a gold hammer-and-sickle symbol in the upper-left corner. The red color represented the blood shed during the Russian Revolution. The hammer and sickle represented the union of the working class and peasantry.

Flag of the Russian Federation (1991-present)

The flag is based on the flag of the Russian Empire, but with the red stripe replaced with a blue stripe. This flag represents democracy, freedom, and equality.
