Spanish is spoken in South America due to the colonization of the region by Spain beginning in the 15th century. The Spanish conquistadors brought their language and culture with them and imposed it upon the indigenous populations. Over time Spanish became the dominant language in most of the countries in South America. There are are countries in South America where Portuguese or Dutch is the dominant language.
