History of Oceania

Where did chocolate originally come from?

Chocolate originates from the seeds of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. The earliest evidence of chocolate consumption dates back to the Mokaya people of present-day Mexico. The Mokaya used cacao to create a ceremonial drink known as xocoatl. Later, the Maya and Aztec civilizations also adopted cacao cultivation and incorporated chocolate into their culture and religious rituals.
