Ancient history

What did a stamp look like in the 1700s?

In the 1700s, postage stamps as we know them today did not exist. Instead, systems varied country to country.

- Great Britain: The first form of postage prepayment was introduced by the British government in 1661 with the London Penny Post, which operated within London. It included a printed notice indicating that a letter had been prepaid.

- France: The first French stamps, called "timbres-poste," were issued by the French Post in 1849.

- United States: The first U.S. postage stamps were issued in 1847.

Prior to the introduction of adhesive stamps, letters were sent with postage due, and the recipient would pay the postage upon receipt.
