History of Oceania

Why did England send prisoners to Australia?

There are several reasons why England sent prisoners to Australia.

1. Transportation to penal colonies became a form of punishment in response to overcrowding and poor living conditions in prisons.

2. England also saw the establishment of penal colonies as an opportunity to establish new colonies and expand their control over new lands.

3. The availability of land and resources in Australia made it an attractive location for establishing new colonies.

4. Distance from England made it more difficult for prisoners to escape or return once they had been transported.
