Why did Cortes destroy all his ships but one at veracruz?

Cortes destroyed all but one of his ships to prevent his men from deserting and returning to Cuba. By eliminating any escape route, Cortes forced his men to commit to the conquest of Mexico and prevented any dissenters from undermining his authority. This bold and decisive move demonstrated his determination and instilled a sense of camaraderie and shared destiny among his troops, fostering cohesion and unity within the expedition.
