Where did the name RMS Titanic come from and what does it mean?

The name "RMS Titanic" is an acronym that stands for "Royal Mail Ship Titanic". The prefix "RMS" was used by the British shipping company White Star Line to denote its ships that were contracted by the Royal Mail to carry mail and passengers. The name "Titanic" was chosen by White Star Line's chairman, J. Bruce Ismay, who was inspired by the Titans, a race of giant gods in Greek mythology. Ismay believed that the name "Titanic" would convey a sense of strength, power, and invincibility, which he hoped would reflect the ship's size and grandeur.
