August 15th was chosen to mark the 35th anniversary of the Gwangmu Emperor's accession to the Korean throne. The Republic of Korea (ROK), commonly referred to as South Korea, adopted its present name and constitution on this date. Since 1945, South Korea has celebrated its independence on August 15th.

Korea was under the control of the Japanese Empire from 1910 until 1945. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided along the 38th parallel, with the Soviet Union occupying the northern part and the United States occupying the southern part. In the subsequent years, the division has deepened and the two Koreas have followed separate political and economic paths.
