• Napoleon imposed the Continental System (1806-1812) with the hope of crippling the British economy by stopping all commercial dealings.
• France and her allies had to refuse admission into their ports of all goods coming from Britain or her colonies
• It aimed to destroy Britain’s naval supremacy and force her into submission.
Reasons for system’s failure:
Britain’s naval power allowed it to blockade major commercial centres of Europe from where they used the Baltic as an alternative outlet for trade that they could no more send to or get it directly from France.
1. There was widespread smuggling.
• Napoleon’s control weakened after his disastrous retreat from Moscow ( 1812)— it began the collapse not only of Continental system, but that of his entire empire also which crumbled completely with his second defeat and abdication in Waterloo(1815),
