History of Oceania

Why was Easter Island named Island?

The original inhabitants of the island, of the Rapa Nui people, called the island "Te pito o te henua" (the Earth's navel) or "Rapa Nui" (Great Rapa). Early European visitors named it Easter Island because it was discovered on Easter Sunday in 1722, by the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen. Some people refer to the island by its original name.
