World War II caused the deaths of millions of people, with estimates ranging from 70 to 85 million. More than half of these deaths were civilians, including an estimated 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust. The Soviet Union is believed to have suffered the greatest number of casualties of any nation participating in the war, an estimated 27 million. Other countries with high casualty totals include China, Poland, Germany, and Japan.
