What is the word origin for world?

The word "world" comes from the Old English word "werold," which is thought to be derived from the Proto-Germanic word "*weraldiz." This word is also the root of the words "weird" and "wyrd," both of which refer to fate or destiny. The Old English word "werold" originally meant "age" or "lifetime." Over time, it came to be used in the sense of "the inhabited earth," and eventually simply "world."
