What waas appeasement?

Appeasement was the policy of making concessions to an aggressor nation in order to avoid war. The policy was pursued by the British and French governments in the 1930s in an attempt to avoid war with Nazi Germany. Appeasement failed to prevent the outbreak of World War II in 1939.

Some examples of appeasement policies include:

* The British and French governments' failure to respond to Germany's remilitarization of the Rhineland in 1936.

* The British and French governments' agreement to allow Germany to annex Austria in 1938.

* The British and French governments' agreement to allow Germany to occupy the Sudetenland in 1938.

Appeasement was a controversial policy, and many people believe that it only emboldened Hitler and contributed to the outbreak of World War II.
