What was the reason for founding Portsmouth?

The primary reason for the founding of Portsmouth in the 17th century was religious freedom and the pursuit of religious autonomy. Religious dissenters from the Church of England, seeking a place where they could freely worship according to their beliefs, established the town of Portsmouth in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The prominent figure Roger Williams, who was exiled from the Massachusetts colony for his nonconformist religious views, played a crucial role in the establishment and growth of Portsmouth.
