History of North America

What were the two major campaigns fought in Georgia during civil war?

* The Atlanta Campaign: This campaign, which lasted from May to September 1864, was one of the most significant campaigns of the Civil War. Union General William T. Sherman led a force of over 100,000 troops against Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee. Sherman's goal was to capture Atlanta, which was a major transportation and manufacturing center for the Confederacy. After several months of bloody fighting, Sherman's forces finally captured Atlanta on September 2, 1864.

* Sherman's March to the Sea: After capturing Atlanta, Sherman embarked on a daring march through Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean. His goal was to destroy Confederate infrastructure and resources, and to cut off Lee's army from its vital supplies. Sherman's forces burned and pillaged their way through Georgia, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. They reached Savannah on December 21, 1864, and captured the city without a fight.
