History of North America

What are the native American groups in middle colonies?

Native American groups in the Middle Colonies:

Powhatan Confederacy/Lenape

The Powhatan Confederacy, also known as the Tsenacommacah, was a paramount chiefdom of Algonquian-speaking peoples in the coastal plain of present-day Virginia and the Tidewater region of Maryland. The confederacy was made up of multiple chiefdoms, each with its own werowance (chief) and subordinate to the paramount chief. The confederacy was led by Powhatan, a charismatic leader who was able to unite the various chiefdoms under his control. The Powhatan Confederacy was a major power in the region until it was defeated by English settlers in the 17th century.

Mohawks

The Mohawks, or Kanien'kehá:ka in Mohawk, were the easternmost tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy. Their traditional territory was located in present-day New York State and extended into Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Quebec. The Mohawks were known for their fierce warriors and their political influence within the confederacy. They played a significant role in the fur trade and were often allied with the English against their French and Algonquian enemies. The Mohawks continued to play an important role in Native American affairs during the colonial and early national periods, but their population and influence declined significantly by the 19th century.

Delaware

The Delaware, also known as the Lenape, were an Algonquian-speaking people who originally inhabited a large area in the Mid-Atlantic region of North America. Their territory included present-day Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and parts of New York and Maryland. The Delaware were a matrilineal society and were organized into clans and phratries. They were skilled farmers and hunters and were known for their diplomacy and peacemaking skills. The Delaware were heavily impacted by European colonization and warfare and were eventually forced to cede most of their land. Today, the Delaware people are enrolled in several federally recognized tribes and continue to maintain their cultural traditions.
