The first use of machine guns in battle occurred during the American Civil War. On July 1, 1862, during the Battle of Malvern Hill, the Union Army deployed a battery of five Gatling guns, each capable of firing 200 rounds per minute. The Gatling gun was the first successful multi-barrel machine gun, and its use in combat marked a significant shift in the history of warfare.
