What was the catalyst for US entry into Spanish American War?

The explosion of the USS Maine

On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine exploded in Havana harbor, killing 266 American sailors. Although the cause of the explosion was never definitively determined, many Americans believed that the Spanish had deliberately sunk the ship. This incident heightened tensions between the United States and Spain and helped to bring about the Spanish-American War.
