What signaled the shift from civil rights to black power?

The Watts riots in Los Angeles in August 1965 are often seen as the turning point from the civil rights to the Black Power movements. Although the civil rights movement had achieved significant successes, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, many African Americans still faced pervasive racism and poverty in the United States. The Watts riots were a major outbreak of violence that occurred in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles and is seen as a reaction to the poor living conditions and police brutality that African Americans in the area faced. The riots, which lasted for six days, resulted in 34 deaths, more than 1,000 injuries, and millions of dollars in property damage. The riots drew national attention to the conditions faced by African Americans and helped to shift the focus of the civil rights movement towards the idea of self-determination, black pride, and community empowerment.
