The 9th of February, commemoration day of the national poet Dionysios Solomos, has been established as the World Day of the Greek Language, according to joint decision no. /2017).
"With the establishment of this world day, the aim is to highlight the fundamental role played by the Greek language over the centuries, essentially contributing to the consolidation of both European and global culture. During ancient times, the Greek language was fortunate enough to become a vehicle for shaping and transmitting important scientific theories, philosophical considerations and literary texts. A little later, the most important texts of Christianity were written in Greek to spread throughout the world. Over the centuries, its contribution as a means of storing and disseminating Greek culture has been decisive, and it survives to this day, in its newest version, as one of the longest living languages in the world" is stated in a circular of the Ministry of Education.
According to the joint ministerial decision, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will ensure the recognition of the International Day of the Greek Language by international organizations, such as the UN and UNESCO.
The World Day of the Greek Language includes events in all educational institutions in Greece, but also in educational institutions abroad, which maintain departments for learning the Greek language or Greek studies.
