When three civil rights workers disappeared during freedom summer the SNCC claimed that they had been what?

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) claimed that the three civil rights workers who disappeared during Freedom Summer had been kidnapped by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The three workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, had been working to register African Americans to vote in Mississippi when they were stopped by a group of white men and arrested. They were then taken to a remote area and beaten before being shot to death. Their bodies were found several weeks later, and the FBI eventually arrested 19 suspects in connection with their murders.
