English immigrants began arriving in North America in the early 17th century. The first permanent English settlement in North America was Jamestown, Virginia, which was founded in 1607. In the following years, other English settlements were established along the Atlantic coast, including Plymouth, Massachusetts (1620), Boston, Massachusetts (1630), and New Haven, Connecticut (1638).
