History of North America

When were the Northern US colonies settled?

The Northern US colonies were settled primarily in the 17th century, with some settlements beginning in the late 16th century. The first successful English settlement was Jamestown, established in 1607 in what is now Virginia (in the Chesapeake region of the Mid-Atlantic). English settlements of New England (present-day Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine) began after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620, and other colonies were founded in the area throughout the 17th century. The Dutch also established settlements in the Mid-Atlantic region, the most notable being New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island (present-day New York City), which was founded in 1624.
