What was a major goal of the freedmens bureau?

The Freedmen's Bureau was established in 1865 to help former slaves make the transition to freedom. One of its major goals was to provide education to the formerly enslaved. The bureau established and supported schools throughout the South, and provided teachers, books, and other supplies. The bureau also helped to fund schools established by religious and charitable organizations. The bureau's efforts helped to make education accessible to thousands of former slaves and their children, and helped to lay the foundation for the public school system in the South.
