History of North America

Where do tornadoes mostly occur in the united states and why?

The Great Plains states in the central United States have the highest rates of tornadoes because of the environmental conditions present.

Warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with cooler dryer air at a weather front, often leading to thunderstorms.

Strong upper-level winds push the storms upward into spinning thunderstorm updrafts called mesocyclones and can lead to tornado formation within those mesocyclones.
