Trumen Doctrine - 1947

- Commitment to contain Soviet expansion

- Greece and Turkey were the first recipients of massive military and economic aid

Marshall Plan - 1947

- Aid offered to all European nations, communist and non-communists alike, to rebuild after World War II

- Soviet satellite states refused American assistance

Berlin Airlift - 1948-1949

- Western Allies responded to the Soviet blockade on West Berlin by airlifting food and supplies for over a year

NATO - 1949

- North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed as a military alliance between the U.S., Canada, and 10 Western European nations

- Committed to aid any member state that was attacked

These initiatives are collectively referred to as the Containment Policy and aimed to thwart the spread of communism during the Cold War.
