History of North America

How did the northeast ordinance of 1787 affect practice slavery in northwest territory?

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787:

- Prohibited slavery in the *Northwest Territory*, which comprised present-day Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

- Required a minimum population of 60,000 before a territory could achieve statehood.

- Guaranteed civil liberties and freedom of worship.

- Established a public education system and a plan for dividing the land into townships and sections.

This led to the eventual abolition of slavery in the Old Northwest, making it one of the earliest regions in the United States to do so.
