History of North America

Why do people believe that Democratic Party was against slavery?

While it is generally acknowledged that the Republican Party of its time, led by Abraham Lincoln, supported the abolition of slavery during and beyond the civil war era, and the democratic party of the civil war opposed abolition; the parties have changed significantly in ideologies and policies over time.

Currently, it's inaccurate to characterize these historical positions as entirely reflective of today's political alignment as they evolve and adapt over time and encompass views across varying dimensions.
