The 1940 Jefferson nickel is made of cupro-nickel which has 75% copper and 25% nickel. Most business strikes were produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints using 75% copper (75 Cu) mixed with 25% nickel.

Due to a shortage of nickel metal early in World War II, the Denver and San Francisco Mints produced nickels composed by five 3⁄4-cent coins which consisted of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese
