History of North America

Why did US citizens fight in the civil war against each other?

The US Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865. It arose from deep economic and political controversies between Northern and Southern States over issues such as slavery and states' rights. The South, dependent on agriculture and slavery, and seeing their social and economic systems under attack, wanted independence. The North, more industrialised, and increasingly opposed to slavery, wanted to maintain the Union. Over half a million people died in the conflict.
