History of North America

Where did slavery start in the US?

Slavery in the United States began in the early 1600s, when the first African slaves were brought to the colonies by European settlers. The institution of slavery quickly spread throughout the Southern colonies, which became heavily dependent on slave labor for agricultural production, especially in the cultivation of tobacco, cotton, and sugar. By the time of the American Revolution, there were over half a million slaves living in the United States, mostly in the South.
