John Cabot's voyage of exploration in 1497 marked the first time that England had sent a ship across the Atlantic Ocean to explore North America . Giovanni Caboto also known as John Cabot , sailed under a commission from King Henry Vll to find a route to Asia that would avoid lands claimed by Spain and Portugal under the Treaty of Tordesillas .

In the spring of 1497 , he commanded a small fleet of three or possibly five ships from Bristol and sailed westward across the North Atlantic Ocean . He made landfall on the coast of Newfoundland on June 24, claiming the land for King Henry Vll .Cabot believed he had reached Asia and thought that he had found the way to sail to China and the East Indies.
