History of North America

How many slaves where in the north during civil war?

The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 legally freed all slaves in Confederate states, with the exception of some areas. The vast majority of slaves in the United States at the time of the Civil War lived in the South, and the exact number of slaves in the North is difficult to determine. However, it is estimated that there were approximately 100,000 slaves in the North in the early 1860s.
