History of North America

How did the north feel about southern secession in civil war?

The northern United States viewed the secession of the southern states as rebellion, not a legal exercise of states' rights. They regarded the war as necessary to preserve the Constitution, the authority of the federal government, and national unity.

The North believed that secession of one or more states were illegal and unconstitutional as it would undermine the principle of the indivisible nation. The people in the North regarded themselves as true patriots for defending and upholding Constitution and the American Union . This created a strong sense of nationalism throughout the northern states.
