Did the sinking of Lusitania start World War 1?

The sinking of the Lusitania was a major contributor to the US entering World War I, but it did not start World War I. When Germany sank the British ocean liner Lusitania in May 1915, killing nearly 1,200 people, including 128 Americans, it brought the United States to the brink of war with Germany. It was the major trigger but not the start of World War 1.
