José Rizal is considered by Austin Coates and Esteban de Ocampo as the first exponent of Asian Nationalism owing to his influential writings, namely the novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," which critically examined the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. These works contributed significantly to the emergence of Philippine nationalism and inspired succeeding generations of nationalists throughout Asia.
