Foot binding in China reached extremes that limited the women's ability to get up from a table or chair without assistance. Some even lost the ability to get up altogether in later life unless someone was on hand to help. Thus confined for much of their adult lives, foot bound women's radius of activity and movement became dramatically circumscribed and diminished.
